Breaking Bad habits

Everyone has habits and whilst some can be beneficial to us, others such as smoking, comfort eating and gambling are detrimental to our health and well-being. Habits can bring about many challenges, with relationship difficulties and financial problems being just two.

They are learned behaviours which are usually carried out subconsciously, almost without decision making or thinking involved. It is for this reason that they can be difficult to break.

Hypnotherapy works directly with the subconscious mind and is therefore one of the most effective ways to help change unwanted habits. Research has shown hypnotherapy to be up to three times more effective in helping those looking to quit smoking than the patch, and up to fifteen times as effective as willpower alone.

Using relaxation and hypnotherapy techniques, a hypnotherapist is able to bypass the conscious-critical part of the mind in order to reach the subconscious. This is the area of the mind that is responsible for retaining habits. Here, the root cause of the habit can be established. The emotional factors that provoke the habit can be safely challenged and positive suggestions can be made to alter the way in which these habits are processed, allowing constructive changes to be made quickly and efficiently.

Habits such as nail-biting, skin-picking and hair-pulling are usually provoked by anxiety and stress. Hypnotherapy can work to find and eliminate the root cause of the habit, before helping to increase an individual’s ability to relax and create their own sense of calm. Particular focus is placed on reducing stress and anxiety and improving confidence and self-esteem.

If you want to rid yourself of those self-defeating behaviours which may be holding you back, hypnotherapy could help set you free.
